From Grouse to Herons: A Weekend Full of Wildlife

This Weekend Was for the Birds!
This weekend was truly for the birds—and it was amazing to witness. Everywhere I traveled, there were signs that spring is fully underway through the wildlife returning and coming back to life.

I saw two different ruffed grouse (partridge) strutting their stuff, trying to impress a mate, and came across a group of about 20 turkeys in a field, with one big Tom proudly showing off. At Sandy Hollow Lakefront Vacation Home, I spotted a bird I’d never seen before—a male Hooded Merganser, with its distinctive flashy feathers. Overhead, the skies were busy too, with eagles and vultures soaring on the warm spring air. I even caught sight of a young eagle making a meal out of a deer mishap on the side of the road.

And just this morning, another welcome sight—the Blue Heron is back, quietly stalking the pond looking for some breakfast.

It’s moments like these that remind me how lucky we are to live in a place where nature is so close and so vibrant. There was plenty more that happened over the weekend, but those are stories for another day. For now, we’ll celebrate the return of the birds and the promise of warmer, busier days ahead!
