The Western Upper Peninsula in summer is one of Michigan’s best kept secrets. The crowds that swarm Traverse City and Mackinac? They haven’t figured out the Keweenaw yet. Up here, you get Lake Superior beaches with room to breathe, rivers loaded with fish, trails built for adventure, skies dark enough to see the Northern Lights, and some of the warmest, most genuine Yooper hospitality you’ll find anywhere. Summer in the UP isn’t a vacation — it’s a reset. 🌲

🌊 Beaches & Waterfront

Lake Superior is the largest freshwater lake on the planet — and the Keweenaw Peninsula sits right on its shore. The water is crystal clear, the beaches are uncrowded, and the sunsets are genuinely world-class. Here are the spots we keep coming back to all summer long.

Agate Beach ⭐ Our Favorite

About 30 minutes south of Houghton on the western Keweenaw shore — this is our go-to all summer. Hunt for Lake Superior agates along the shoreline, swim in the lake (it warms up by July!), watch the sun drop below the horizon, and on clear nights, catch some of the best Northern Lights viewing in Michigan. It never gets crowded, which is exactly why we love it. Agate Beach info →

Misery Bay ⭐ Our Favorite

Don’t let the name fool you — Misery Bay is anything but. Sandy shore, gorgeous sunset exposure, and a super-shallow extended swimming area that’s perfect for families and kids. Cross the Misery River and you’ve got over a mile of white sand beach almost entirely to yourself. There’s also a boat launch if you want to get out on the water for fishing or a sunset cruise. Only 8.5 miles south of Agate Beach — hit both in the same day and you’ll understand why people come back every summer. More beach info →

Chassell Bay & Centennial Park

Calm, protected waters right in Chassell — great for swimming, kayaking, and fishing from the boardwalk. Centennial Park has a swimming area, playground, fish cleaning station, and dog park. Great sunrises AND sunsets. If you’re staying at our Chassell Adventure Campground, this is literally your backyard.

Sandy Lake — Twin Lakes

Sandy Lake Twin Lakes Michigan
Sandy Lake — Twin Lakes, MI

Our Sandy Lake properties in Twin Lakes sit on 187 feet of Sandy Lake frontage — private lakefront access, fire pit, swimming, kayaking, and fishing right out the door. This is the kind of summer escape people dream about. See our lakefront listings →

💦 Waterfalls

The Western UP is waterfall country. The Keweenaw and surrounding counties have more waterfalls than most people realize, and summer is a great time to explore them — the trails are open, the foliage is lush, and you can actually swim at some of them. Here are three of our favorites within a reasonable drive of our properties.

Canyon Falls — Baraga County ⭐ Don’t Miss

Known as Michigan’s Grand Canyon, Canyon Falls is one of the most dramatic natural features in the entire Upper Peninsula. The Sturgeon River — the same river that flows through Chassell Bay — drops nearly 30 feet over smooth black rock into a stunning box canyon carved by thousands of years of glacial runoff. The trail is an easy one-mile walk from a roadside park right on US-41, passing several smaller cascades and a popular cliff-jumping pool before reaching the main falls. The gorge walls are sheer volcanic rock with springs seeping from the cliffs and ancient trees growing out of the stone. It’s genuinely one of those places you have to see to believe. Located about 15 miles south of L’Anse on US-41 — it’s an easy day trip from Twin Lakes. Canyon Falls info →

Bond Falls — Ontonagon County ⭐ Best in the Western UP

Many locals will tell you Bond Falls is the most beautiful waterfall in all of Michigan — and honestly, it’s hard to argue. The Middle Branch of the Ontonagon River cascades 50 feet over a wide shelf of fractured volcanic rock, fanning out over 100 feet across in a dramatic curtain of water. A 600-foot accessible boardwalk with six viewing platforms and a bridge lets you walk right to the middle of the falls — no serious hiking required. It’s a Michigan State Park, so bring your Recreation Passport. Head east on Bond Falls Road off US-45, about 9 miles south of Bruce Crossing. Well worth the drive. Bond Falls info →

Wyandotte Falls — Twin Lakes (Local Hidden Gem)

Right in the Twin Lakes area and one of the most underrated waterfalls in the Keweenaw. The Misery River drains Lake Roland and Lake Gerald (the Twin Lakes) westward toward Lake Superior, dropping in a series of stages through ancient cedar forest over moss-covered basalt rock. The falls are tucked into a stand of huge old-growth cedars that feel absolutely primordial — like you’ve stepped back in time. The trail is a short 5–10 minute walk from a small parking area just past Wyandotte Hills Golf Course off Poyhonen Road. Flow is best in spring and early summer. If you’re staying at our Sandy Lake properties, this is minutes from your door. Wyandotte Falls info →

🥾 Hiking Trails

The Twin Lakes, Chassell, and South Range areas are home to some of the best accessible hiking in the Western UP — not the epic wilderness suffer-fests of Copper Harbor or the Porkies, but genuinely beautiful trails through northwoods, along rivers, and past lake overlooks that anyone can enjoy. Here’s where we send our guests.

Twin Lakes State Park Nature Trail — Twin Lakes

A 1.5-mile loop through the woods at Twin Lakes State Park that feels like a hidden gem hiding in plain sight. The trail winds through quiet northwoods and offers two scenic overlooks with views stretching to Lake Superior on clear days. It’s beginner-friendly, peaceful, and connects to the park’s beach and picnic area so you can make a full day of it — hike the trail, hit the beach, grab lunch at the picnic tables. Requires a Michigan Recreation Passport for vehicle entry. Twin Lakes State Park info →

Bill Nicholls Trail — Twin Lakes to South Range

A 41-mile multi-use rail trail that follows the old Copper Range Railroad grade from Houghton all the way to Mass City — and Twin Lakes State Park sits right at the midpoint, making it a perfect place to hop on. Hikers, bikers, horseback riders, and UTV/SxS riders all share this trail through the Copper Country backcountry. You’ll pass through dense northwoods, open meadows, old mining country, and cross several streams along the way. You don’t need to do all 41 miles — even a 5–10 mile out-and-back from Twin Lakes gives you a serious taste of what the trail is all about. If you’re staying at our South Range properties, the trail is practically in your backyard. Bill Nicholls Trail info →

NARA Nature Trails — Chassell

A 100+ acre nature park right in the heart of Chassell with elevated boardwalk sections winding through Pilgrim River wetlands — one of the most unique trail experiences in the area. You’re walking above the wetland, watching herons and kingfishers, listening to frogs, and looking out over the river floodplain. The boardwalk connects to upland trails through hardwood forest and runs along the Keweenaw Waterway. Perfect for families, photographers, and anyone who wants a beautiful outdoor experience without busting their knees on rocks. Free to use, right in town. If you’re staying at our Chassell Adventure Campground, you can walk to the trailhead.

What’s Running in Summer

Bass and Pike season opens May 23rd and runs all summer — and the Western UP has some excellent Bass and Pike water. Yellow Perch are active all summer and make for great eating. The Portage Canal and Chassell Bay are loaded with Perch, and don’t be surprised to hook something much bigger. The Sturgeon River gives up everything from Bullhead and Bass to the occasional Lake Sturgeon — one of the most prehistoric-looking creatures in freshwater.

Best Summer Fishing Spots

Chassell Bay — Calm water, boat launch, great for Walleye, Crappie, and Perch. Our Chassell Campground has plenty of room for boats and trailers.
Portage Lake & Houghton Waterfront — Drop a line right from the city pier or take a boat out. Pike, Bass, and Perch all summer.
Sturgeon River — Multiple shore access and kayak launch points. Everything from Bullhead to actual Lake Sturgeon.
Pilgrim River — Raised boardwalk with fishing platforms. Great Bass and Trout fishing with beautiful sunset views.
South Portage Entry — Your boat launch to Keweenaw Bay. Yellow Perch, Salmon, Steelhead, and Lake Sturgeon all run through here.

🌌 Northern Lights

This doesn’t get talked about enough — the Keweenaw Peninsula is one of the best places in the continental United States to see the Northern Lights. The combination of latitude, minimal light pollution, and Lake Superior’s expansive horizon creates viewing conditions that rival anywhere in the country. Summer nights when the sky stays clear are prime time — and Agate Beach, Eagle River, and the Keweenaw Dark Sky Park are your best bets. Keweenaw Dark Sky Park info →

🎪 Summer Events

The UP knows how to do summer. Here are the events worth planning your trip around.

  • Wednesday Night Pier Concerts — Houghton — Live music on the downtown waterfront pier all summer. Chairs provided, cold drinks nearby.
  • Keweenaw Brewfest — August — One of the UP’s best annual events. Local and regional craft breweries, great atmosphere, and a beautiful Houghton setting.

  • Century 21 Summer Concert Series — August Thursdays — Live music at the Houghton Waterfront Park band shell.

🍺 Food & Drink

Summer in the Keweenaw is best enjoyed with good food and cold drinks. Here are our personal picks — the places we actually send our friends.

  • Joey’s Seafood & Grill — The definitive Houghton dining experience. Lake Superior Whitefish, fish tacos, crab, scallops, steaks, ribs, and homemade clam chowder. If you only eat at one restaurant on your trip, make it Joey’s.
  • Keweenaw Brewing Company (KBC) — Grab a pint on the outdoor deck, bring in food from somewhere nearby, and stay as long as you want. This is a Houghton summer tradition.
  • The Ambassador — Thin and crispy pizza, historic gnome murals, and one of the best views of Portage Lake in town. Walk down Shelden Ave until you smell it.
  • 1902 Tap & Grill — South Range — Pizza, burgers, Friday fish fry, Saturday ribs, and hand-scooped ice cream. Perfect after a day on the trails or the water. Right near Trail 3 and our South Range apartments.
