Choosing the Silver Lining

January is officially in the books, and it came in strong. A ton of snow, hundreds of skiers and snowmobilers, massive snow removal efforts, higher heating bills—and with all of that, the fresh opportunity that only a new year can bring.

There’s something to be said for keeping a positive attitude and finding the silver lining, even when the storm clouds are heavy and the forecast looks endless. Heikki Lunta’s snow machine is still running, and many areas have already surpassed 200 inches of snowfall. If history holds true, we’ll likely see 300 inches or more before winter finally loosens its grip.

For the first time in weeks, the forecast is showing a shift. Highs in the 20s this weekend, and possibly no more sub-zero lows going forward. Around here, that feels like spring. Life moves slower in winter, and in many ways, that’s the point. The season forces you to notice the outdoors, the weather, the quiet moments between storms—and that’s exactly why so many people choose to spend their vacation time here.

Winter in the Upper Peninsula isn’t something you rush through. It’s something you experience. Snow-covered trails, frozen lakes, crisp air, and the kind of stillness that’s hard to find anywhere else.
It’s going to be a great day if you choose that—and push forward with it.
