White Gold Season – The Science Behind Our Endless Snow

Lake Effect Living — Why Winter Never Really Stops Here

This time of year we start hearing the same question from people outside the area:

“Are you still getting snow up there?”

The answer is almost always yes — and the reason surprises a lot of people.

Most of the snow in the Western Upper Peninsula doesn’t actually come from big winter storms. It comes from Lake Superior itself.

When cold air moves across the relatively warmer water of Lake Superior, the jet stream picks up moisture. As that air mass travels inland and rises higher in elevation, the moisture freezes and falls…right on top of us. That’s lake-effect snow.

And that’s why Twin Lakes and South Range are in a bit of a sweet spot.
Higher elevation + close proximity to the lake = daily fluffy snowfall.

It’s not uncommon for us to wake up to 4–6 inches of fresh powder while towns just 20 miles away have sunshine and bare pavement. It sounds exaggerated until you’ve lived it — but it happens far more often than people expect.

For our snowmobile guests, this is heaven.

Fresh snow almost every day keeps the trails soft and rideable, and it allows the groomers to maintain incredible trail conditions. The seasoned riders know the real secret too — Sunday through Thursday riding. The weekends get busy with visitors and day-trippers, but mid-week riders get the smoothest trails and the quietest woods.

One of the best parts of the winter season has been the relationships built with returning guests who now plan their trips around those days. What started as reservations has turned into conversations, stories, and friendships that come back year after year.

We still have about 45 days of prime trail riding ahead, and around here that’s a full season in itself.

But winter is only one chapter.

Even while the sleds are running and the powder keeps falling, the next season is already in motion. Renovations are coming to the second half of Jake’s, and the Sandy Lake Retreat is getting a full refresh — bringing a true 1970’s cabin into a modern lakeside getaway while keeping its character intact.

That’s the rhythm of life here.
We’re always enjoying the current season while preparing for the next one.

Before long the snow melts, the trails turn to water routes, and summer guests arrive for waterfalls, fishing, and long nights on the lake. But for now, we still get to enjoy the white gold.

Cheers to the second half of winter — and the momentum that carries us into spring.

Have you ever ridden in true lake-effect powder, or would you rather visit during summer? Tell us in the comments — we love hearing what season people would choose!
