10 Reasons to Spend Your Summer in the Keweenaw (And Where to Stay)
If you’ve been scrolling through the same old Michigan summer destinations — Traverse City, Mackinac Island, the Sleeping Bear Dunes — we’d like to make a case for going north. Further north. All the way to the tip of the Keweenaw Peninsula, where the crowds thin out, the water runs crystal clear, and summer feels the way it’s supposed to feel.
Here are 10 reasons the Western Upper Peninsula should be at the top of your summer list — and exactly where to stay when you get here.
1. 🌊 Lake Superior Beaches With Room to Breathe
No crowds, no parking nightmares, no overpriced fudge shops nearby. Agate Beach and Misery Bay are two of our favorites — wide open Lake Superior shoreline where you can hunt for agates, swim when the water warms up in July, and watch the kind of sunset that makes people move here permanently. Miles of beach and you might share it with a handful of other people. That’s the UP.
2. 💦 World-Class Waterfalls Within an Easy Drive
The Western UP has more waterfalls than most people realize, and summer is prime time to explore them. Canyon Falls in Baraga County — known as Michigan’s Grand Canyon — drops nearly 30 feet over black volcanic rock into a stunning box canyon. Bond Falls in Ontonagon County is what many locals call the most beautiful waterfall in all of Michigan: 50 feet high, 100 feet wide, with an accessible boardwalk that lets you walk right to the middle of it. And right in the Twin Lakes area, the quiet, ancient-feeling Wyandotte Falls on the Misery River is a local hidden gem that most tourists never find. Three incredible waterfalls, all within a reasonable day-trip radius.
3. 🎣 Fishing That Doesn’t Disappoint

Bass and Pike season opens May 23rd. Yellow Perch are running all summer in Chassell Bay and the Portage Canal. The Sturgeon River kicks up everything from Bullhead and Bass to the occasional Lake Sturgeon — one of the most prehistoric-looking creatures in freshwater. Whether you’re a serious angler or just want to drop a line off a dock, the Western UP delivers. Our Chassell Adventure Campground has plenty of parking for boats and trailers if you’re bringing yours.
4. 🥾 Hiking Trails for Every Level
You don’t need to be an ultramarathoner to enjoy the trails up here. The Twin Lakes State Park Nature Trail is a peaceful 1.5-mile loop with Lake Superior overlooks that anyone in the family can handle. The NARA Nature Trails in Chassell feature elevated boardwalks through Pilgrim River wetlands — one of the most unique trail experiences in the region. And the Bill Nicholls Trail is a 41-mile rail trail through old copper mining country, with Twin Lakes State Park right at the midpoint — perfect for hikers, bikers, and UTV riders who want to cover some serious ground.
5. 🌌 Northern Lights — In Summer
Most people don’t know that summer is actually a great time to see the Northern Lights in the Keweenaw. The combination of latitude, minimal light pollution, and Lake Superior’s massive open horizon creates some of the best Aurora viewing conditions in the continental United States. When the skies are clear and the solar activity is right, the show is genuinely jaw-dropping. Agate Beach, Eagle River, and the Keweenaw Dark Sky Park are your best bets for an unobstructed view.
6. 🏕️ A Campground That’s Actually Worth It

Our Chassell Adventure Campground & Cabins is built for summer. Fourteen sites (8 with electric and water hookups, 6 electric only), plus cabins and furnished apartments for those who want more comfort without losing the Northwoods feel. Minutes from Chassell Bay, the Sturgeon River, and the NARA trails. Centrally located for day trips to anywhere in the Keweenaw. Book your site on Campspot →
7. 🚣 Get Out on the Water
The Keweenaw Waterway cuts right through the peninsula — calm, scenic, and perfect for kayaking and paddling. Chassell Bay is a great spot for a relaxed morning on the water before the wind picks up. Want something a little different? Hop aboard the S.S. Dragonfly with Copper Country Boat Tours — a silent electric boat that glides through Portage Lake and lets you take in the scenery the way it was meant to be experienced.
8. 🎪 Summer Events Worth Planning Around
The UP knows how to do summer. Wednesday Night Pier Concerts bring live music to the Houghton waterfront all season long. The Keweenaw Brewfest in August draws craft breweries from across the region for one of the UP’s best annual events. The Century 21 Summer Concert Series runs Thursday evenings in August at the Houghton Waterfront Park band shell. And the Parade of Nations in September — MTU’s celebration of international culture — is the perfect way to close out the summer season.
9. 🍺 Food and Drink That Punches Above Its Weight
For a small town, Houghton eats well. Joey’s Seafood & Grill is the definitive Keweenaw dining experience — Lake Superior Whitefish, fish tacos, homemade clam chowder, and ribs that people drive hours for. Keweenaw Brewing Company has an outdoor deck made for summer afternoons. The Ambassador does thin-crust pizza with a view of Portage Lake. And 1902 Tap & Grill in South Range handles the Friday fish fry and Saturday ribs — don’t miss it.
