Summer is officially here in the Western UP, and if you’re not already making plans, you’re already behind. The Keweenaw Peninsula and surrounding region are wide open, uncrowded, and doing what they do best — being absolutely stunning. Here’s what we’d do this weekend if we had a free Saturday and Sunday.

1. Chase a Waterfall (or Three)

June runoff keeps the falls running hard, and right now is one of the best times of year to see them. Bond Falls near Paulding is one of the most photogenic waterfalls in the entire Midwest — wide, tiered, and easy to access with a short walk. Canyon Falls on the Sturgeon River is wilder and more dramatic. Wyandotte Falls is the locals’ pick: fewer people, raw and beautiful. Hit all three and you’ve got a full morning.

2. Fish the Sturgeon River

The Sturgeon River is one of the best trout streams in the UP, and early June is prime time. Brown trout are active, water temps are right, and the crowds haven’t shown up yet. Wade in below the falls or float a section with a canoe. If you’re not a fly angler, spinning gear with a small Mepps or Rooster Tail works just fine.

3. Ride the Trails Out of Jake’s

If you’re on a UTV or ATV, you already know Jake’s Bed & Bar in Twin Lakes is the move. Ride-in, ride-out access to hundreds of miles of trails, cold beer, good food, and a place to crash when the day’s done. June trails are dry, the canopy is full, and you’ll have the woods mostly to yourself before peak summer hits.

4. Explore Misery Bay

Not everyone knows about Misery Bay on the Keweenaw Peninsula, and that’s exactly why it’s worth the trip. A quiet, protected bay on Lake Superior’s south shore — perfect for kayaking, paddleboarding, or just sitting on the rocks watching the water. Agates are a bonus if you look down.

5. Hit Agate Beach

Speaking of agates — Agate Beach is the go-to spot for rockhounds and casual beachgoers alike. Walk the shoreline after a wave action and look for the banded reddish stones. Even if you don’t find a thing, the beach itself with Lake Superior stretching out to the horizon is worth every mile of the drive.

6. Grab a Pint at Keweenaw Brewing Company

If you haven’t had a pint on KBC’s deck in Houghton on a warm June evening, you’re missing one of the quintessential Western UP experiences. They rotate seasonal taps, the food is solid, and the Portage Canal view doesn’t get old. Go on a Friday evening and you’ll likely catch live music drifting from somewhere nearby.

7. Drive the Covered Road

The Covered Road — formally Alder Road in Stanton Township — is a lush tunnel of hardwoods between Baraga and L’Anse. In early June, the leaves are fully out and the canopy is thick. It’s a slow, peaceful drive that feels like another world. Combine it with a stop at the Shrine of the Snowshoe Priest at the top of Baraga Hill for a panoramic view of Keweenaw Bay.

8. Take the Lift Bridge Across the Portage

It sounds simple, but if you’ve never watched the Portage Lake Lift Bridge rise for a vessel passing through, it’s a genuine spectacle. Time it right and you’ll see a freighter or tall ship heading into Lake Superior. Houghton’s waterfront is walkable and lively in June — grab lunch at the Ambassador or an ice cream cone and watch the boats go by.

9. Camp at Twin Lakes State Park

If you’re looking to spend the night under the UP sky, Twin Lakes State Park between Houghton and Baraga is a gem. Wooded campsites, a sandy beach on inland lakes that warm up faster than Superior, and a nature trail through hardwoods that shows off the transition from spring to summer. Book ahead — it fills up on summer weekends.

10. Just Drive North Until You Hit Superior

Seriously. Get in the car, head north on US-41 through Calumet and Copper Harbor, and don’t stop until the road ends at the water. The Keweenaw tip is wild, remote, and one of the most beautiful places in the Great Lakes region. Brockway Mountain Drive is open, the wildflowers are still going, and on a clear day you can see forever. There’s no wrong stop along the way.
