An Evening on Home Waters: Beaver Dams, Big Trout, and a Buck

Last Saturday, the Yooper Lodge and I were able to jump on our home waters again and spend another evening fishing.

We found a massive beaver dam holding some great trout, and got a look at one of the larger trout we’ve seen in years just chilling beneath the dam before we spooked it. We caught up with some geese and ducks along the way too, which made fishing a small stream a bit more of a challenge — but we still managed several great fish for the pan.

This was the 4th time we’ve been able to hit the water this summer — about 3 more times than we’ve managed in many years.

On the walk back through the field, we caught a glimpse of a young buck with a small basket rack, along with a family of 5 sandhill cranes. Just a great way to spend an evening here in the UP.

We always talk about starting a part-time guide service — we could offer a great adventure for potential clients. But with us only getting out a handful of times a year, we greedily take that time for our own sanity and relaxation. There are also a number of limitations and costs that currently stand in the way, but it’s been in the planning phase since we were in high school.

On a side note — this kind of trip has us thinking about a future Vault Ventures vacation rental purchase in Marquette County. Having a place to stay out that way would turn a fishing trip like this into a fuller getaway, instead of a drive out, fish, hike out, and drive back. If that’s something that would interest you as a future rental option, we’d love to hear it — let us know!

Until the next fishing adventure, cheers!
