Your Front-Row Seat to Canal Colors Festival 2026

Fall in the Keweenaw is a whole event unto itself, and this year Houghton is throwing a four-day party to prove it. Canal Colors Festival runs Thursday, October 1 through Sunday, October 4, 2026, right along the Portage Canal — and if you’re staying with Vault Ventures, you’re already close enough to walk to most of it.

What’s Happening

Thursday, Oct. 1 — Pre-Festival Fun
The Digital Plaidurday Passport opens (check in at spots around town all weekend for a shot at plaid-themed prizes), plus a Plaid Paint N’ Sip at Small Craft in Hancock and Plaid BINGO at Beviamo in Houghton.

Friday, Oct. 2 — Plaidurday + Brew Street
The big one: Houghton tries to reclaim its own world record for most people wearing plaid in one place, at the Houghton High School football field (1:30 p.m.). Then it’s Brew Street from 5–9 p.m. behind Keweenaw Brewing Company — live music, food trucks, yard games, and Social District drinks that donate $1 each to the Carnegie Museum of the Keweenaw. There’s also a giant pumpkin contest, a lumberjack-themed fashion competition, and a second Plaidurday photo at 7 p.m.

Saturday, Oct. 3 — Color Run + Fall Fest
The Keweenaw Color Run kicks off at 10 a.m. along the canal waterfront, followed by Fall Fest from 11 a.m.–2 p.m. on the Houghton Pier: free cider and donuts, tractor rides, a sled dog meet-and-greet, and a pie-eating contest with a $400 cash prize on the line.

Sunday, Oct. 4 — Wrap It Up
Last chance to finish your Digital Plaidurday Passport — stops include the Carnegie Museum, Houghton-Douglass Falls, and a scenic chairlift ride at Mont Ripley.

Why Stay With Us for It

Fall color along the canal peaks right around this festival weekend, and it’s genuinely one of the best times of year to be in the Copper Country — hills turning on both sides of the water, crisp air, and a town that’s fully in party mode. Whether you’re coming for the plaid, the pie contest, or just the views, book early: Canal Colors Festival is only in its second year and it’s already drawing a crowd.

Check availability at our Houghton-area vacation rentals — book direct here on the site, or find us on Airbnb — and make a weekend of it. Just a short drive from Michigan Tech (MTU), our properties put you close to campus and to all the Canal Colors action downtown.
