Winter Curveballs, Strong Partnerships, and Pushing Forward

Winter in the Upper Peninsula doesn’t pull punches, and this season has certainly kept us on our toes. Between record activity and a handful of unexpected curveballs, things have moved fast—so fast, in fact, that blog posts took a temporary back seat while we focused on what mattered most: our guests, our properties, and keeping everything running smoothly.

The biggest stressor came when the propane tank ran empty at both Sandy Lake Lodge and Sandy Lake Retreat. Add to that a broken window at Goose’s Hall, a recliner casualty at Jake’s Bed & Bar, a damaged shower at the Lodge, and an emergency septic pump failure at Whispering Pines that required immediate repair. None of these were planned, none were convenient—but all of them were handled quickly to keep guests comfortable and protected.

At the same time, reservations have been stronger than ever. We hosted a group that arrived with nine trucks and trailers (more than expected), welcomed ice anglers pulling quality perch and bass through the ice at the Retreat, and saw snowmobilers logging miles upon miles of prime trail riding—with a solid two months of winter fun still ahead. That’s the balance of winter hosting: high demand paired with high responsibility.

What makes days like these manageable is the team around us. From snow removal to plumbing, heating, cleaning, and maintenance, we lean heavily on trusted partners who show up when things get tough. Winter doesn’t slow down here, and neither can we.

Despite the challenges, our guests have been phenomenal over the holidays—understanding, communicative, and genuinely enjoying what the season has to offer. That makes the long days and quick decisions worth it.

As we catch our breath for a moment and roll into the new year, we’re pushing forward with intention. Next up: real estate sales updates as the phones continue ringing, and steady progress on the Jake’s remodel as that project takes shape.

Have you experienced a winter curveball this year—travel, home, or work-related?
Thinking about a winter getaway, a snowmobile trip, or a lake stay? Reach out—we’re always happy to help.

Here’s to learning fast, adapting faster, and continuing the adventure into the new year.
