Winter in the Western Upper Peninsula is the real deal. We get buried in some of the deepest, most reliable snow anywhere east of the Rockies — often 200 to 300+ inches a season — and the whole peninsula transforms into a snow-lover’s paradise. World-class snowmobile trails, downhill and cross-country skiing, ice fishing, fat biking, and one of the best winter festivals in the country. Grab your gear — we’ll keep the place warm.

❄️ The Snow — Why the Keweenaw Is Different
Cold air sweeping across Lake Superior picks up moisture and dumps it right on the Keweenaw. That lake-effect snow makes this one of the snowiest places in the lower 48 — many winters top 200 inches, and big years push past 300. Just ask the snow gauge along US-41 north of Phoenix. The upside? A long, dependable season from December into March, when other places are hoping for flurries.
🛷 Snowmobiling
The Keweenaw is one of the Midwest’s premier snowmobiling destinations, with hundreds of miles of groomed trails linking small towns, frozen waterfalls, scenic overlooks and Lake Superior shoreline all the way up to Copper Harbor. Deep snow, long seasons and friendly trailside stops make it a bucket-list ride.
Trail Access From Our Properties
Jake’s Bed & Bar in Twin Lakes and our South Range apartments sit right on or near the trail system — park the trailer, unload, and ride straight from your door. See all our snowmobile-friendly rentals.
⛷️ Skiing & Snowboarding
Mont Ripley — Houghton
Michigan Tech’s ski hill sits right across the bridge from Houghton, with views over the Portage Canal and runs for every ability. It’s an easy, family-friendly day on the slopes. For a quiet home base just minutes away, check out our cabins and suites in Chassell.
Mount Bohemia — Lac La Belle
The most extreme ski terrain in the Midwest — ungroomed, deep powder and an expert-only reputation. If you ski, it’s a bucket-list trip near the tip of the Keweenaw. Heading to Bohemia? Whispering Pines in Calumet is our closest stay to the mountain and a favorite with Bohemia skiers.
Cross-Country & Nordic
The Swedetown Trails in Calumet, Maasto Hiihto in Hancock and the Michigan Tech Trails in Houghton offer beautifully groomed Nordic skiing, plus snowshoe and fat bike routes.
🎣 Ice Fishing
When the lakes lock up, the hard-water season begins. Sandy Lake, Portage and Torch Lake, and dozens of inland lakes offer perch, bluegill, pike and walleye. At our Sandy Lake properties, the ice is right outside your door. Chassell is an ice fishing hotspot too — our Chassell cabins and suites are just a short drive to the boat launch. Always check local ice conditions before heading out.
🐾 More Winter Adventures
Strap on snowshoes at Twin Lakes State Park or along the Bill Nicholls Trail, ride fat bikes on groomed singletrack, chase frozen waterfalls, and on clear, dark nights, watch for the northern lights over Lake Superior.
🎓 MTU Winter Carnival — February 3–6, 2027
Since 1922, Michigan Tech’s Winter Carnival has turned Houghton into a snowy wonderland — massive, multi-story snow statues, the legendary all-night build, broomball, human dogsled races and more. It’s one of the biggest winter festivals in the country, and rentals near MTU book up fast for Carnival weekend. Booking months ahead? Our payment plan lets you lock in today’s rate with just $250 down. See our stays near MTU.
🍲 Winter Warm-Ups — Food & Local Flavors
After a day in the cold, nothing beats a hot pasty, a Friday fish fry or a pint by the fire. A few local favorites: Joey’s Seafood & Grill in Houghton, Keweenaw Brewing Company, and the Library in Houghton. For more ideas, see our Explore the Western UP guide.
