Your Guide to Winter in the Keweenaw: Snow, Sleds, Skiing and Where to Stay
If you’ve never spent a winter in Michigan’s Keweenaw Peninsula, here’s the short version: it snows. A lot. Lake Superior lake-effect snow regularly buries the Copper Country under 200 to 300 inches a season, and the whole region turns into one of the best winter playgrounds in the Midwest. Here’s what to do, when to come, and how to lock in your stay without paying it all up front.
When to Come
The reliable snow season runs from December into March. January and February are peak for snowmobiling and skiing, and the first weekend of February is MTU Winter Carnival, one of the busiest weekends of the year in Houghton. If you want those dates, book early.
Snowmobiling
Hundreds of miles of groomed trails connect small towns, frozen waterfalls and Lake Superior shoreline all the way to Copper Harbor. Several of our properties in Twin Lakes and South Range sit on or near the trail system, so you can unload the trailer and ride from the door. See our snowmobile-friendly rentals.
Skiing and Snowboarding
Mont Ripley in Houghton is an easy, family-friendly hill with views of the Portage Canal, and our Chassell cabins and suites are just minutes away. Mount Bohemia, near the tip of the Keweenaw, is famous for ungroomed, expert-level powder, and Whispering Pines in Calumet is our closest stay to the mountain. Nordic skiers will love the Swedetown Trails, Maasto Hiihto and the Michigan Tech Trails.
Ice Fishing
Once the lakes lock up, the hard-water season begins. At our Sandy Lake properties the ice is right outside your door, and Chassell is a local ice fishing hotspot just a short drive to the boat launch. Always check ice conditions before heading out.
